I was in meetings with the other Civic Unions and the City of Edmonton from 11:00 am until 10:00 pm on Friday. We had an face-to-face emergency meeting at the IBEW Union Hall on Friday night, and virtual meetings all weekend. We signed a Temporary Layoff and Recalls Letter of Understanding at 4:50 pm on Sunday.
The LOU was a compromise. Protecting the income stream of our Members as best we could and maintaining benefits, while recognizing the unprecedented challenges facing the City. the people at the table included the City of Edmonton, the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 30, Civic Service Union 52, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 1007, Edmonton Fire Fighters Union, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 569 and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 569, DATS Unit.
We firmly believe this LOU offers our Members as much job security as possible during this crisis while allowing the City the flexibility to operate in a manner that keeps the citizens of Edmonton and our members as safe and as healthy as possible.
We, along with out Brothers and Sisters at the other Civic Unions, are committed to ongoing, collaborative communication with the City to achieve that goal.
As I write this around 2:00 pm on Monday, March 30th, the city has announced temporary layoffs for over 2,000 employees. 1,600 in Citizen Services and 489 in Edmonton Public Library.
