Unfortunately we have seen more layoffs at IBEW 424. We had 2 members of the administrative staff laid off on Monday, March 30th, 2020. The administration and IT folks there are IBEW 1007 Members.
IBEW 424 has approximately 5,000 members on the books (that is, out of work), due mostly to the lack of construction work, primarily in the petro-chemical sector. However, our members in administration seemed to have enough work to keep them employed, at least in the short term. However, the Company has made the decision to let some long term employees go.
The members who were laid off did have seniority over others who are still working, but there may be language in the Collective Bargaining Agreement that allows such a thing. We are looking into it.
Earlier in March, in a particularly callous act, IBEW 424 laid of two senior staff members. The member in Fort MacMurray had run that office for 17 years and had recently lost her husband (4 months ago). The other member ran the Calgary office for the last 10 years. They were both sent packing in a classless display of disrespect and insensitivity. They both had seniority and should have been redeployed. That was actually offered to one of them, and while she was making arrangements to move to Edmonton the offer was rescinded with no reason given. Just plain cruelty.
Grievances have been filed and I’m optimistic any fair minded arbitrator will give these ladies their due. I better leave it at that because I could very easily slip into libellous language … although our legal council once told me “if it’s true it’s not libel”. Better safe than sorry, well see them on court.
